Possibly a celebration for some but more likely, for others, the occasion brought back terrible memories of suffering and hardship. This country of fertile plains, luscious terrain, with its remarkably rich history and heritage, was born in 1971 following a bitter struggle for independence that claimed the lives of over 3 million people. The birth pains linger; there is much poverty and many challenges lie ahead, but there are also expectations for better things to come through foreign direct investment (FDI) and infrastructure development. Meeting infrastructure needs Last year, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) indicated that Bangladesh’s economy had become the 48th largest in the world. The UK Investors Chronicle has identified Bangladesh as one of the world’s seven hottest emerging markets due to its relatively stable currency with solid foreign reserves and record foreign remittances, as well as 6. 7% real growth rate in 2011. The Bangladesh government has set itself the challenge to transform into a middle income country by 2021. In line with this strategic vision, the government has undertaken massive programmes for infrastructure development in partnership with the private sector. As the government allows 100% FDI, the infrastructure sector offers an interesting mix of opportunities for overseas interests. In October 2011, Bangladesh and the ADB announced a US$4. 5 billion five-year Country Partnership Strategy (CPS), which will include an investment programme of about US$4. 5 billion for 2011 – 15. ADB’s support will be focused on six sectors: energy, transport, urban development, education, agriculture, and natural resources and finance. In the energy sector, ADB will aim to enhance access to power, to improve energy efficiency and to develop a policy and regulatory setting conducive to private sector participation. In transport, ADB’s assistance will be targeted at better road and railway infrastructure for fostering higher growth, and support for environmentally friendly modes of transport. To accelerate growth, the CPS will prioritise private sector development by addressing major infrastructure constraints and skills gaps. Building for the future In February, transport expert, M. Rahmatullah, said that Bangladesh could earn about US$44 million pa by providing a transit facility to India and its neighbours over the next five years while developing the infrastructure for this facility. If the infrastructure was ready in five years, the country could earn US$0. 5 billion from the sixth year and US$1 billion from the sixteenth. He said: â€Å"For Bangladesh, transit will open up new avenues of opportunities. It will make out a case for India and China investing in deep-sea port facilities in the country. Some 16 million t of cargo would possibly move between the northeastern Indian states and the rest of the country. Bangladesh would require US$7 billion over the next decade to develop its transport system, including roads, rails and waterways for the transit system to be in place. As might have been expected, these comments were met with a degree of derision and cynicism in some sectors, but with welc ome comments in others. Whatever the outcome of talks surrounding this and other projects, the construction industry in Bangladesh is currently booming. This is due to housing, industrial and infrastructure demand,†says Mehedy Amin, Technical Director, Development Constructions Ltd. â€Å"We expect this demand to stay on due to the high population and expanding middle class society. †Cement production increases Mehedy Amin is predicting some problems in the future, especially regarding cement prices. â€Å"The country imports most of its clinker from abroad and with the increasing value of the US$ against local currency, the price of cement is rocketing up along with most construction materials. In January 2012, Bangladesh’s Export Promotion Bureau released data confirming that cement exports had witnessed a 21% increase in the first seven months of the current fiscal year (July 2011 – January 2012). Abdul Khaleq Parvez, Vice President of the Bangladesh Cement Manufacturers Association, commenting on the export situation said: â€Å"The export market is growing slowly as the prices of local cement increased sharply following devaluation of the local currency. Cement prices have increased by at least US$17/t†. The prices rose because of the sudden rise in production costs, this being a consequence of power shortages and a rise in labour wages. Shankar Kumar Roy, General Manager, Business Development, Holcim Bangladesh, told WORLD CEMENT that in 2011 there were 45 active cement companies in the country. â€Å"Cement demand was 14 million t, while capacity reached 24 million t and exports totalled 250 000 t†. It is said that cement production has boomed in Bangladesh since the late 1980s, with many cement plants springing up across the country. New projects Shun Shing Group International Ltd (SSGIL) has developed into a successful bulk commodity trading, shipping and investment company. A landmark investment took place in 2001 when it established a 0. 5 million t cement grinding mill in Kaligoni in Bangladesh. By the end of 2012, SSGIL’s cement production will be 3. 1 million t through increased capacity at the current site and a new plant in Khulna city, to cover the southwest market. In January of this year, HeidelbergCement officially inaugurated a new cement mill at its plant at the seaport of Chittagong. The project involved the installation of a cement grinding mill with a capacity of 105 tph, and a slag dryer with a capacity of 45 tph. HeidelbergCement has been active in Bangladesh since 1998 and is one of the largest German investors in the country. In addition to the grinding plant at Chittagong, the Group operates another grinding plant in Dhaka. Bashundhara Cement, part of the major Bashundhara Group, is currently building a 7000 tpd plant in Narayaganij. Meghna Cement, also part of the Bashundhara Group, together with Bashundhara Cement will jointly manufacture 13 500 tpd of cement, equating to 15 – 18% of cement demand in the country. In July 2011, India’s Supreme Court granted permission for Lafarge Surma Cement to resume mining limestone in the East Khasi Hills in Meghalaya state in the country’s mineral-rich northeast. The limestone is transported from Meghalaya to Lafarge Umiam Mining Pvt Ltd by a 17 km conveyor belt, where it feeds the company’s cement plant at Chhatask in Bangladesh. In February 2010 the court halted Lafarge from extracting the limestone as it was mining in an environmentally sensitive zone. India’s environment ministry told the court in April that it had cleared the mining project with strict conditions. Up to then it was reported that Lafarge had been importing clinker from abroad. The original agreement between India and Bangladesh to permit the cross-border industrial project was signed in November 2000. It was financed by Lafarge, Cementos Molins, the IFC, the ADB, German Development Bank, the European Investment Bank and the Netherlands Development Co. Unique Cement Industries Ltd. : Unique cement industries ltd established in the year 2002. The factory is built with modern machinery imported from Germany and China with production capacity of 1800 M/T per day. Unique cement industries ltd. as ISO 9001:2000 Certificate. They have two brands of cement in the local market namely FRESH and MEGHNACEM. Holcim (Bangladesh) Ltd. : Holcim (Bangladesh) Ltd started its operation in this country with of the acquisition of the-then Hyundai cement. Subsequently it acquired United Cement and Saiham Cement. Holcim (Bangladesh) Ltd is affiliated with the Holcim Group worldwide and is one the lar gest multinational cement producers in the world with manufacturing in over 70 countries. The group has a produrtion capacity of mor than 120 million tones of cement per year. MTC Cement Industries Ltd. MTC Cement Industries Ltd established with the tehnical co-operation of CITIC engineering of PRC in year of 1998 is situated on the embankment of the river Meghna. There is a two unit cement plant with capacity of 1200 MT per day. TIGER BRAND Cement started its commercial voyage on july 2001. Currently MTC is on an expansion program in pagla with a small 150 MT per day capacity cement grinding plant. Lafarge Surma Cement Ltd. : Lafarge/cement mills is setting up the only modern, integrated cement manufacturing plan known as Lafarge Surma Cement Ltd. in Bangladesh at Chattak under Sunamgonj district. The majority of Lafarge Surma Cement Ltd. Shareholding (60%) is held by a 50/50 joint venture company bewteen Lafarge and cementos molins. Founded in 1833, Lafarge operates in 75 countries, employing 77,000 people. In 2002, the group generated annual sales of Euro 14. 6 billion and globally holdstop ranking positions in Cement, Aggregates amp; Concrete, Roofing and Gypsum. Cementos Molins is a renowned spanish cement company with an annual revenue of Euro 485 million and net profit of Euro 70 million. Operating in Spain, Argentina, Uruguay and Mexico, it produces Portland and Calcium-Aluminate cement, Concrete and Precast concrete, Aggregates and Special purpose ortars. Lafarge Surma Cement Ltd. will extract and procss the basic raw materials like limestone and shale from its from its own quarry in Meghalaya, India. A 17 km crossborder belt conveyor will be installed to link the quarry with the cement plant for transportation of raw materials. A massive land filling and site development has been completed on the 90 acre plan t site. The construction and erection is also. The plant will initially produce 1. 2 millions tons of cement per year. Premier Cement Mills Ltd : Started its production in March, 2004, Premier is the second largest cement manufacturer in Bangladesh. With a total installed cement capacity of almost a million tons per year at Muktarpul, Munshiganj, the Company is recognized as a leading cement producer with abundant supply of raw materials, low production cost and an energy efficient operation. The Company currently employs 216 persons and has an extensive distribution system throughout the country. Its transportation subsidiary, with three prominent transport companies in Bangladesh, operate a large fleet of trucks to distribute cement products in bags almost anywhere in the country. The Company was founded in 2001 as the private cement producer in Bangladesh, with a factory in Muktarpul, Munshiganj. The Company started production in March, 2004 with Unit 1, which had an installed capacity of 730,000 tons of cement per year, and would be followed by Unit 2, also at 730,000 tons of cement per year, by the mid of 2005. The factory is equipped with world-class European technology built in Denmark and Germany.           Blurred Lines                                                        Today we live in a world that keeps us on the run. There is a way to get in contact with anyone at any given time. There is no such thing as ‘getting away’ because we have created a society of people that want to be found. But it is also through this technology, the same one that keeps us connected to the outside world, that we can get lost. The simplest video game can help a person escape into a different reality, spending hours on end in front of a computer screen, looking for nothing in particular on e-bay. This gets us lost. We engulf ourselves in things that have nothing to do with our daily lives because we’ve had enough, our life is too much to handle. So we focus on AIM, or video games, anything that can take us out of our life, and into something better. But then where do we draw the line? When does it become okay to spend an entire day on the computer because life was too stressful? Or, still worst, when the life we lead to get away, becomes our daily life. We lie about our lives and retell occurrences that really did not take place. Things that happened on our mental breaks become reality. These lies then have to proceed and grow, because we don’t want to be exposed. That cannot happen because that would add more stress, but what we don’t realize is that by perpetuating the lies we become more and more stressed. The exact reason we needed to get away has come back full circle. In the play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? the line between truth and illusion has very nearly disappeared. No longer does the reader know when the character is telling the truth or embellishing a lie. Even still is the character himself is being honest to his personality.      George and Martha have a very tumultuous marriage. In some respects it is obvious that there is some deep rooted love. The simple fact that they have been married for twenty three years shows that although they are high spirited, there is love. What does not match up very w... ...mans, it is in our nature to find an easy solution for a problem. In many cases it is a means of escaping, and finding something better. For these four characters, the illusions they used to get out of the stresses of normal life, become their lives. Instead of dealing with issues with their spouses and getting what they want in life they blur themselves to reality. It becomes a question of when is reality too much to handle? For these characters reality was too much to handle the minute they got scared. The second the future was in jeopardy, or their reputation was on the line. This is not unlike society today. People are desperate for approval and will seek this by any means. Without approval from others we cease to exist or be content. And for many contentment is also something that must be achieved.      But for these four characters contentment only came at the expense of others. Their happiness depended on the illusions they concocted. These illusions, the ones that used to just help them escape reality and be happy became their reality. A Red, Red Rose Essay
Robert Burns wrote â€Å"A Red, Red Rose†and edited by Peter Urbani. It was first in printed in 1794 in A Selection of Scots Songs. This was shown in ballad stanzas because it was composed with four – line stanzas or quatrains, having alternating tetrameter and trimeter lines which emphasized that the first and third lines of each stanza had four stressed syllables, or beats whereas the second and fourth lines had three stressed syllables. The line of this poem â€Å"That’s sweet / ly play’d / in tune†was an example of iambic meter in which the first syllable was unstressed and the second was stressed. The implication of this poem was about the thoughts and descriptions of love in a way that exceeded beyond the non – literary sources from which the verse was drawn. The poet first similarly declared his love in a blooming rose in spring and then in a melody â€Å"sweetly play’d in tune. †For me, these similes indicated the beauty and happiness of being in love. The metaphor â€Å"sands o’ life†pointed out the eternal nature of the writer’s love that explained the extent of his love. There were much imagery mentioned here like the color red that meant love and passion and the exquisite image of the rose was represented by the recapitulation of the color â€Å"red. †The word â€Å"Newly Sprung†intended for his sincere and great love. As I analyzed this piece, I obtained the knowledge and information about the true meaning of love. The way he illustrated his love, I observed that for him it was precious and worth keeping for. Burns also declared that once we felt love and it was true, it must be for a lifetime. â€Å"Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun†, meant that no matter how far or near the lovers were, love will always be there and stays forever. The entire logic of this poem is about the unconditional love that he can offer to the one he used to love. The true love in a sensible way was being illustrated by John Frederick Nims in his poem entitled â€Å"Love Poem. †The love that was impossible and unreachable was also the idea being shown by this sonnet. The essence of sticking to the one you love regardless of his imperfect qualities was the theme of this poem. From the metaphors in Nim’s piece, he brought to reality the figure of a very clumsy individual. â€Å"All devotion, at your knees†meant that despite of that unpleasant quality, she was so beautiful, charming and refine. Her good qualities were the reason why those who knew her keep her. From the lines â€Å"So gayly in love’s unbreakable heaven/Our souls on glory of spilt bourbon float,†it characterized that even clumsiness wouldn’t affect his love. The line â€Å"Their souls float on spilt bourbon†, which proved that they were happy with the presence of her fault. The metaphor in the line â€Å"Be with me darling early and late,†meant that they must stayed together during their youth and when they became old. The meaning of this line â€Å"Her hands, which â€Å"shipwreck vases,/At whose quick touch all glasses chip and ring,†showed the gracefulness of people. , and â€Å"should your hands drop white and empty/All the toys of the world would break,†described that the things she did using her hands wouldn’t fade away but will still remain and unreplacable. There were also symbolic images like â€Å"my clumsiest dear,†â€Å"chip and ring,†â€Å"bull in china†and a â€Å"bur in linen†that showed the partnership of appreciation and condemnation. But in the stanza â€Å"The refugee uncertain at the door/you make at home†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (6 – 7) he commended the quality of his lover as a charitable one. Nevertheless, the whole idea of this poem was about the exposition of the girl he loved, her positive and negative side. He wanted to share the readers that in loving a person, we must adore his good qualities and love them despite of flawed qualities. The two poems are the same in iambic meter and in quatrains. The tone of both writers as they convey their feelings on their loved one’s shows that they are so much in love with love. They are so sincere in expressing their affection and passion towards their lovers with no hesitation and no limitation. When it comes to the voice according to the writers, I can see that Burns is so fascinated to his lover. All the things that he can see are all beautiful and the way he promises his love is so precious for him. As we go deeper beyond the meaning of the poem, the author doesn’t mind the negative traits of his lover nor mentions his flaws. Nevertheless, Burns only indicates how big his love is for the girl whom he loved. Moreover, how he promises that he can offer and sacrifice a lot for the fulfillment of his love. While, Nims obviously starts his poem in a different way. He shows the negative side of his lover. He even mentions the wrong impressions toward his girl. He doesn’t even bother to cover up the flaws of the one he loves instead of covering, he exposes the blemishes of his lover. However, the author doesn’t mean that he just wants to intimidate his girl but proudly tell the whole world and all the readers that despite of her flaws and shortcomings, he loved her so much. Now the difference of the two poems when it comes to declaring the love for their special someone is that the first author loves without looking or even mentioning the flaws of his girl or loving the person unconditionally while the latter explains how to love by accepting the reality that a person has the negative and positive characteristics. The symbols or images use in both poems also differ. Burns uses similes that focus on the natural resources like rose, music, seas, sun, sands, and rocks. For me, it implies that the author is a nature lover. He shares to the readers that when we are in love, the beauty of the things that surrounds us are all that we can see and appreciate and it gives a happy feeling. While, Nims uses metaphors where in the center idea is about the things or toys that can cause noise and to the things that we usually use everyday like vases, glasses, bulls, burs, dime and toys. In here, he shows the poem as if it is in a movie or in a story telling type. He details what are the happenings and how he accepts the flaws of the one he loves. For me, this poem is so interesting because he directs the readers to the exact situation of the things that are happening to him. He never hides the flaws of his girl maybe because the true meaning of this poem is about acceptance. According to my evaluation, accepting the weaknesses of the one he loves will show the true meaning of love. We don’t have to hide the imperfections of our loved ones because if we learn to love and accept them despite of the blemishes of the one we use to love, I think the power of love will strongly manifest and can’t be broken or shaken easily. But for me, both poems are so interesting and appealing. In reality, there are two kinds of lovers. The first one is the one who doesn’t see the negative side of the person that he used to love because he is blinded by his love while the other one is that he sees first the weaknesses of his lover and then learn to love that person. Both kind of love is passionate and ideal. Learning how to love though in different ways depends upon the person but we must love unconditionally, fervently, without hesitation and reservation, with acceptance and forgiveness, and by showing it through actions and words. Analysis of †Don’t you hate having two heads†The short story genre is characterized with a short length, few people and a short story line. Short stories often begins in media res. Short stories are fiction and has a composition. This novel is a crime story because it contains a murder. This short story is not a typical kind of crime story because the reader doesn’t know there’s the murder until the end. Christine Pauls’ short story Don’t you hate having two heads is about Richard and his trip to Venice. Richard meets Jessica, an unknown woman to him, at an art museum. He is married but hides his wedding ring and seeks other women. After a brief conversation with Jessica she disappears and Richard believes he has lost his chance to†¦show more content†¦The sentences are relatively short. The grammar is easy and there isn’t any dominating word classes. However, there are many verbs and pronouns because the story is about what Richard does and he is referred to as him. The short story is eight pages long and follows the classic short story structure. The story starts in media res in the middle of Venice. There are few people, it has a short storyline and an open end. The whole story is evenly except in the end. In the beginning there’s tension when Richard sees Jessica, thereafter the action is falling but the story ends with an open end and a new climax. That’s why the short stories fit into Chart 2 in Wider Contexts: containing a beginning, then the first climax, the falling action, and finally the second climax. The story takes place chronologically, but in the end Richard has a flashback. The point of view is third person limited most of the time, but in the end it changes to third person omniscient narrator which creates the excitement. It begins with Richard being the main character and you are told the story from his point of view and gains insight into his thoughts and feelings. At the end of the story it develops into an omniscient narrator, when we discover that Jessica is the killer.
